NEW DELHI: A former honcho of Delhi Police, Amod Kanth is in the news again. This time in the US state department's list of model public servants spearheading causes of vulnerable children in India. As a founder-member of a childcare institution and policeman, Kanth found a mention in the US annual report of Trafficking in Persons, 2005 (TIP-2005) as "a model of public service to the vulnerable children of India" and also "as one of the modern-day heroes fighting against menace of slavery and poverty", along with popstar Ricky Martin, former US senator Nancy Kassebaum, Pakistani human rights activist Ansar Burney, Senegalese family minister Aido Mbodji, and her majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden".
Prayas Institute for Juvenile Justice, the institution he founded in 1988, has also been recognised as one where "world's best practices" are being carried out for over 17 years last. Kanth is currently serving as Director General of Police at Arunachal Pradesh. The RIP-2005 mentions pioneering work of 'Prayas' in childcare for protection, rehabilitation and social re-integration, particularly for the ''trafficking survivors' in India. The report also mentions "an impressive network of shelter homes, drop-in care and alternative education centres for marginalised children with assistance from national government and donors". The TIP-2005 also lists the Prayas' efforts in developing a nationwide emergency 'Childline', with helps from the Social Justice and Empowerment ministry.
